Struggling for another Iraq: Meet the Iraqi Social Forum

More than 11 years after the war in Iraq and the US invasion, Iraqis are still struggling to pay the war price and overcome sectarian challenges caused by wrong choices of the occupation authorities. Both authoritarian policies by the Iraqi institutions and the action of militias try to cancel space for independent civil society to build peace and struggle for change with civil means.

In spite of the critical situation, Iraqi social movements and civil society organizations organized themselves in the Iraqi Social Forum (ISF) since 2013 to propose alternatives: building a sustainable and just peace, and rebuilding their country.

More than 3000 activists, mostly young Iraqis, and a small International solidarity delegation took part in 3 days of activities during the first ISF in Baghdad, in September 2013.

The ISF now promotes civil society campaigns for human rights and social justice, with international support of the Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative. In this meeting in Oslo the Iraqi delegation will discuss the current situation in Iraq, present the ISF dynamics and its main campaigns: Save the Tigris, Freedom of Expression, Workers rights, Stop private military companies, Sherazade for women rights.Arrangør: Stiftelsen Karibu, Norges Sosiale Forum, Irakiske Sosiale forum
